35 Doors and 19 Windows for the new Sala Beckett

The lecture will focus on the process of designing and building the Sala Beckett Theatre in Barcelona, the most recent work by the Flores & Prats architecture studio.

The project has been developed in close relationship with the Theatre Director and the existing building.

The way in which the Sala Beckett team and the Flores & Prats studio develop their ideas is by testing them physically. The handicrafts practised by the theatre team are similar to the way the studio develops their ideas: through hand drawings, modelling and conversation. This similarity facilitated the relationship during the design process.

Tales of the City

Forget the boulevard and the block: it’s an inherent confusion that makes cities so vital. Against a background of mutating functions, and accidental superimpositions, switching scales and flashes of desire, Nigel Coates has always drawn inspiration from the entire breadth of the urban environment. Architecture always needs to celebrate its contingency on life in the city and raise the bar for the citizen. In our role as architects and designers, how can we channel this turbulent mix? In his own form of architectural storytelling citing installations exhibited in various galleries over three decades, Coates will explore his recurring theme of the fictional urban model. From 'Ecstacity' to 'Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens', these mix photography, found objects, 3D printed buildings and occasional film and furniture of his own design.

Atlas of the Unbuilt World (Model Exhibition)

Atlas of the Unbuilt World will provide a snap-shot of a new world through architectural models and artefacts. It will feature example works by some of the most interesting international architects from around the world. Each model will illustrate a new future for the country involved through a series of 'real' projects, those either in planning or under construction, which are due for completion in the coming years.

As an Initiating Partner of the, now annual,  London Festival of Architecture (June 1-30) the British Council coordinates the International Architecture Showcase, a diverse programme of international exhibitions and events in collaboration with London’s embassies and cultural institutes.

An exhibition of six site-specific works by the Bartlett School of Architecture

As Professor of Architecture at the Royal Academy, Sir John Soane had a tradition of opening up his home to his architectural students. Pitzhanger Manor-House's collaboration with Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, continues this practice, engaging Soane’s historic Pitzhanger Manor-House with contemporary architectural installations.

In Soane Annex(ed) Bartlett presents new work by Year 1 students annexing six areas throughout the house, using it as a testing ground for new ideas and concepts - challenging the traditional understanding of ‘architecture’, ‘design’ and ‘space’. The temporary nature of the installations offers the student a freedom to experiment with materials and crafting.

CJ Lim is an architect based in London.


He says "My architecture is spatial storytelling and employs narratives in creating visions and innovative architecture, landscape and urban design focusing on interpretations of cultural programmes."


He uses collages and models to generate narrative structures that guide his work. See below:

Sketchbooks: Smout and Allen

Mark Smout and Laura Allen are Senior Lecturers at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL.  They say: 

"Our work takes two routes, architectural competitions, where the particular rigour of the competition brief, site and program provide the basis for new investigations and, conceptual design projects which test out the agenda and methodology of the design research practice. We focus on the dynamic relationship between the natural and the man made and how this can be revealed to enhance the experience of the architectural landscape."
