Fab Fest 2016 Registration Open

Fab Fest is a new International Fabrication Festival hosted this summer by the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment and the Fabrication Laboratory at the University of Westminster. It will feature 50 or more innovative cardboard pavilions designed and built by students from Westminster as well as by guest teams from across the UK and around the world.

Feb Fest will run from June 28th - July 2nd.

Joseph Cornell Exhibition at the Royal Academy 4 July — 27 Sept 2015

"Wanderlust brings together 80 of Cornell’s most remarkable boxes, assemblages, collages and films, some never before seen outside the USA. Entirely self-taught, the independence of Cornell’s creative voice won the admiration of artists from Marcel Duchamp and the Surrealists, to Robert Motherwell and the Abstract Expressionists, with echoes of his work felt in Pop and Minimalist art."

3D Printed "Touchable Memories" by pirate3D

"‘touchable memories’ by pirate3D, turns photographs into 3D-printed objects for people without vision. the social experiment project aims to increase the awareness of the endless possibilities of using technology to improve lives. using an affordable home printer called buccaneer, the visually-impaired can re-experience images by fabricating a tangible scene of it."

'Material Imagination' Lecture by Dean David Dernie March 12th 6PM

"As we move towards a digital age of building, where we design, model, procure and even build digitally, architecture is inevitably propelled into a virtual realm. At the same time, we all know that the material conditions of our environment still matter and this lecture will argue that the architecture is first and foremost a physical thing: an architect’s palette comprises of material forms and light. In foregrounding shape and surface, design software promotes a technical (or otherwise fragmentary) knowledge of material."

The project for this year’s week-long intensive design, fabrication, and construction studio is a lightweight, self-supporting Performance Pavilion. +FARM brings together a wide range of professionals to work directly with the participants during the studio. Silo City + Rigidized Metals Corporation: Buffalo, New York

+FARM is excited to announce our 2014 August Studio at Silo City: Buffalo, NY working directly with Rigidized Metals Corporation and the Rigidized Fab-Team to design, fabricate, and construct a multi-level Culture Shelter within an existing grain silo. Ten applicants selected from an open call will work directly with professional craftsmen, fabricators, architects, digital specialists, educators, and Rigidized Metals Fab-Team exposing the participants to emerging design, computation, fabrication, material and construction practices in the field of architecture. The work of artist Clay Ketter

"The former carpenter Clay Ketter constructs walls in the space between house-like interiors and modern abstract painting.

Ketter constructs flat sculptures, installations and three-dimensional paintings – or a compound of all three categories. His striking painting-cum-sculpture-cum-installations principally recall interior design. They capture moments in condemnation or rebuilding usually of limited duration but here freeze-framed in art. The walls exist in a permanent limbo between the presence of demolition and the eternity of art." from ARKEN

His earlier works included the Gulf Coast Slabs, a series of overhead photographs taken of structures after the passage of hurricane Katrina in 2006, one of which is shown above.

+FARM 2014: Winter Studio at the Five Sisters Farm, NY, USA

Open Call: the Sweat Lodge in the Snow

The project for this 5 day intensive design, fabricate, and construction workshop is to build a Sweat Lodge for a weary farmer. The fabrication studio will focus, and participants will learn, digital practices that enhance work flow methods between design, metal fabrication, and installation by using the latest software + techniques.

Participants will warm up with a charrette to produce the design, then will quickly transition to digital techniques geared toward fabrication. Six applicants selected from an international open call will be invited to work with a metal fabrication shop including practicing professionals on site, developing practical, technological, and construction skills. Professional training will be provided in using a plasma cutter, press break, sheer, and basic welding techniques.

The studio investigates the intersections of architecture and science, and applies insights and theories from biology and mathematics to the design, fabrication and production of material structures. They collaborate with scientists and engineers and employ architects, designers and artists. Their applied projects are diverse and operate across multiple length scales including adaptive materials, tapestries, rugs, installations, pavilions and architectural interventions.

'model:making' exhibition at the CAA 06.09.13-.09.11.13

model : making is an exhibition which looks at the increasing use of new technologies by both craftsmen and architectural model makers. Devised to celebrate the London Design Festival, CAA will collaborate with architects Allies and Morrison to present ‘digital’ sketches, early prototypes and finished work, offering the viewer a unique insight into the early stages of the development of an idea.

model : making will explore how the use of new technologies is influencing and changing the aesthetic demands of various creative disciplines.

'Second Nature'

Second Nature is a 20-minute documentary on skater and budding landscape architect, Janne Saario of Finland. The short film allows a glimpse of Saario’s thoughts and dreams, which float between design, art and skateboarding. Though it also reveals the important concurrence of post-industrial areas, sustainable concepts and natural environments, and unfolds the demanding obligation, towards today’s generation and those to come, to create positive and inspiring, local communities.

Dwell says: "Saario started skating when he was six, eventually got sponsored, and through his experience riding around the world he developed an interest in designing landscapes. He's got his own firm now, with a specialty in skate parks."

Atlas of the Unbuilt World (Model Exhibition)
