Fab Fest 2016 Registration Open

Fab Fest is a new International Fabrication Festival hosted this summer by the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment and the Fabrication Laboratory at the University of Westminster. It will feature 50 or more innovative cardboard pavilions designed and built by students from Westminster as well as by guest teams from across the UK and around the world.

Feb Fest will run from June 28th - July 2nd.

Reina Lewis is professor of Cultural Studies at London College of Fashion, and the author of Muslim Fashion: Contemporary Style Cultures (Duke University Press, 2015)

Andreas Philippopoulos-Mihalopoulos is the Director of the Westminster Law and Theory Lab and the author of Spatial Justice: Body, Lawscape, Atmosphere (Routeledge, 2014)

Leopold Lambert is the founder and editor of The Funambulist Magazine and the author of Weaponized Architecture (dpr-barcelona, 2012) 

The Funambulist Magazine is a bimestrial publication about the political relationships of the designed environment with the bodies. It operates alongside a blog and a podcast (Archipelago) that both share the same editorial line.

'Potential Architecture' Exhibition at Ambika P3, 11 March- 19 April

Potential Architecture fuses art and architecture in four site-specific commissions for Ambika P3 by international artists/architects Alexander Brodsky, Sean Griffiths, Joar Nango and Apolonija Šušterŝič. Utilising recycling, craft, and low-tech processes as well as performance, video, sculpture and installation, the works explore the social and material aspects of living environments during the unprecedented large-scale transformation of cities and towns globally.

Third Natures: Rare New SpeciesIn this lecture, architects Cristina Díaz Moreno and Efrén Garcia Grinda, of the Madrid-based studio AMID.cero9, will talk about their recent book, Third Natures: A Micropedia. The book presents 15 years of speculations, projects and built proposals by AMID.cero9 and their collaborators. Taking the form of a condensed encyclopaedia, its content is arranged alphabetically as a dictionary of terms that collectively represent architecture's 'third nature'. Projects are shown through drawings, models, objects and photographs. Their approach, both critical and celebratory, is based on the emergence of new, extreme and unexpected forms of beauty.

Cristina Díaz Moreno & Efrén Garcia Grinda are architects and founders of AMID.cero9. They are Diploma Unit Masters at the Architectural Association (AA) in London and recently held a professorship at the Institut für Kunst und Architektur in Vienna. Since 1998 they have been teaching together in Madrid (in parallel at ETSAM and ESAYA UEM) and have been visiting professors and lecturers throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States. Their projects have been widely disseminated and they have won more than 40 prizes in national and international competitions. Their projects and writings of the last fifteen years were documented last winter in the exhibition and publication Third Natures: A Micropedia. More recently they have constructed the headquarters for the Institución Libre de Enseñanza in Madrid.

As part of his campaign as Chair of Interior and Spatial Design at UAL, entitled Popular Culture and the Interior, Professor Ben Kelly hosts Interior Design: Dead or Alive.

This symposium will take stock of the ability of iconic interiors to affect and influence the direction of popular culture and the wider world. A range of speakers with the widest variety of perspectives and disciplines explore the cultural significance of the subject and practice of interior design in relation to the contexts of art, design, business, media and culture.

The project for this year’s week-long intensive design, fabrication, and construction studio is a lightweight, self-supporting Performance Pavilion. +FARM brings together a wide range of professionals to work directly with the participants during the studio. Ten Participants will progress from introductory to more advanced working sessions with technical content to address issues of: materiality, interiority, component types, and self-supporting architecture. +FARM is excited to announce our 2014 August Studio at Silo City: Buffalo, NY working directly with Rigidized Metals Corporation and the Rigidized Fab-Team to design, fabricate, and construct a multi-level Culture Shelter within an existing grain silo. Ten applicants selected from an open call will work directly with professional craftsmen, fabricators, architects, digital specialists, educators, and Rigidized Metals Fab-Team exposing the participants to emerging design, computation, fabrication, material and construction practices in the field of architecture. Located in Regents Park, a two minute walk from the Marylebone Campus, The Sculpture Park is part of Frieze London. This year it will exhibit contemporary sculptures alongside historical pieces, with new works by both established and emerging artists.

Where Design Meets Life With Alice Rawsthorn

Design is one of the most powerful forces in our lives. When deployed wisely, it can bring us pleasure, choice, strength, decency and much more. But if its power is abused, the outcome can be wasteful, confusing, humiliating, even dangerous. None of us can avoid being affected by design, whether or not we wish to. It is so ubiquitous that it determines how we feel and what we do, often without our noticing.

The International Herald Tribune’s Design Critic Alice Rawsthorn will discusses these issues in her new book, Hello World (Hamish Hamilton, 2013). Rawsthorn will be joined by curator, writer and editor Omar Kholeif for a conversation where they will discuss how warlords, scientists, farmers, hackers, activists and designers have used design to different ends throughout history.

Maya Lin has maintained a careful balance between art and architecture throughout her career, creating a remarkable body of work that encompasses large-scale site specific installations, intimate studio artworks, architectural works and memorials. She draws inspiration from the landscape, interpreting the world through a twenty-first century lens, merging rational order with notions of beauty and the transcendental. Her work asks the viewer to reconsider nature and the environment at a time when it is crucial to do so.
