'Non-conformist' Guest Rooms by heri&salli, Heribert Wolfmayr and Josef Saller

The "architectural duo heri&salli... turned their backs on technological temptations to come up with a kind of 'negative design' that renders the history and original fabric of the building visible. This is seen in the exposed wooden beams and locally-made bricks that lend the rooms a cave-like atmosphere."

'Everything is Architecture' Discussion on Fri 19 June, 1pm at the ICA

"With the spotlight on architecture as the London Festival of Architecture takes over the capital this month and we look ahead to our forthcoming display Everything is Architecture: Bau Magazine from the 60s and 70s (opening 28 July), our Culture Now series looks to architectural practice.

In light of the upcoming display Everything is Architecture: Bau Magazine from the 60s and 70s, this talk serves as a precursory investigation into the little-known Austrian magazine Bau, co-edited between 1965 and 1970 by Hans Hollein, Walter Pichler, Günther Feuerstein and others.

Part of the London Festival of Architecture, for this event, Prof. Murray Fraser will chair a discussion with Peter Cook and architectural historian (and occasional visiting critic for BAIA) Dr. Eva Branscome."

The Retti Candle Shop by Hans Hollein (1966)

In 1966, Hans Hollein  designed  the Retti candle shop for a site just 12ft wide. "...designed like a sparkling aluminium jewellery box, with a grand triumphal entrance in the shape of a cartoonish ionic column punched through its metallic facade, framed by glazed display windows on either side, (it) pulled out at angles towards the street. This thin curtain of aluminium continued within, forming a reflective backdrop to displays of candles, arranged like grand organ pipes beneath bespoke globe light fittings."

'Heavenly River' installation by Julien Salaud

"A luminous, panoramic landscape of UV-coated thread enchants a subterranean cellar in Julien Salaud’s newest site-specific installation, Fleuve Céleste (The Heavenly River). 82 feet beneath the ground, in the cellars of the Maison Ackerman, the eccentric artist has spun a “magical bestiary” with approximately 28 miles of cotton thread and 65,000 nails."

Tokyo Bar by Kengo Kuma

"Tufts of brightly coloured electrical cabling give the walls and furniture of this bar by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma a hairy appearance. The tangle of rainbow-hued wires drapes down the walls, over table-tops and chair backs, and around light-fittings in Tetchan – a bar that serves grilled meat skewers known as Yakitori."

Old Mill Hotel by GRAFT

From the architect: "In the white city of Old Beograd, near the banks of the Sava River, GRAFT transformed the historic building of the “Old Mill” into a 4 Star hotel. The ambitious interior concept embraces and enhances the existing historical structures with new materials, colors and shapes, activating the original qualities of the cultural monument and hence creating a unique visual experience."

Damien Hirst Gallery by Caruso St John set to open this spring in London

"A new London gallery housing the collection of British artist Damien Hirst is set to open (spring 2015) in a row of converted and extended theatre warehouses by Caruso St John Architects."

"The converted warehouses, formerly used for theatre carpentry and scenery production, will have their first floors moved upwards to create a more logical relationship with the existing windows, creating a series of lofty rooms that can be used as offices."
